The Delivering Clean Growth through Sustainable Intensification project (CGSI) was commissioned by Defra to better understand the appropriate mitigation methods that could be applied to English farming to meet climate and productivity targets in the future. The project aimed to identify the most reliable and high potential greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation approaches with the highest technical potential.  The fiches are the result of Work Package 1. These were further used in the project to refine these approaches through the lens of social and economic acceptance and farm level testing in order to ensure uptake of the most feasible technologies and the basis of defining feasible trajectories for English farming up to 2050 (with lessons for other UK farming communities) under 3 mitigation scenarios.

The outputs of the CGSI project now underpin Defra’s decarbonisation plans for agriculture (and agroforestry) and have been critical in developing a rigorous, evidence-based pathway. This has informed the development of the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) standards, Net Zero Strategy and Carbon Budget Delivery Plan.
